The World's Most Uncomfortable Table Just Sold for €6,000

December 20, 2024. Forget about design meant for comfort — this one was made to guarantee the opposite. The Uncomfortable, a 34-legged oak dining table created by Madrid-based art collective CAPITALISM, has just been sold for €6,000 at the Maza.Art contemporary art auction in Madrid.
The bizarre piece, designed to ensure that no seat at a Christmas dinner escapes the nuisance of colliding with a table leg, sparked both fascination and debate when it was first unveiled at CUPRA City Garage. Now, after its sale, the table is set to begin a tour of galleries, bringing its radical idea of "democratized discomfort" to a wider public.
Crafted with a mix of wood, chrome and galvanized steel, copper, and methacrylate, the 2.75-meter-long table embodies CAPITALISM's mission to expose the contradictions of modern life through objects that turn irony into business.
For CAPITALISM, the auction success marks a bold entry into the contemporary art scene. As the collective puts it: "If we can make people smile at the absurdity of society, then immediately buy into it — literally — we've done our job."
